DRUG: NDLEA ARRESTS DRUG PIN & DESTROYED N15.1 WORTH OF INDIAN HEMP

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has discovered  cannabis plantations four states-Ekiti, Edo, Delta and Kogi, they also destroyed Indian hemp with a street value of N15.1bn.

Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, put the total weight of the cannabis intercepted during the raid code-named ‘Operation Weed Eater’ as 1,514,278 kg.

One of the targets of the raid was Uche Obi, the operational head of a cannabis syndicate known as Akunnubas, who was also known as the ‘King Maker’ was arrested along with seven other members of the syndicate and two truck drivers.

Speaking on the raid, Head of NDLEA’s Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said “Cannabis plantations were raided and destroyed at Ise Forest Reserve in Ise/Orun Local Government Area of Ekiti State and Ode Camp in Gboyin Local Government Area of the same state.

“Another plantation was also destroyed at Utese Forest Reserve in Edo State. One hundred officers drawn from various State Commands participated in the operation that lasted for twelve days.”

Ofoyeju said during investigation, Obi revealed that he was referred to as the King Maker because of his overriding influence in determining appointment of other executive members of the cartel.

He said he was also responsible for the execution of punishment on erring members and foes. The cartel was said to control much of the cannabis business in the South West and South South of Nigeria.

“Our investigation revealed that the Akunnubas are responsible for over eighty per cent of cannabis production in Nigeria. The syndicate hires cheap labour including school age children to work in cannabis farms. They use motorcycles in conveying processed cannabis from the farms to a temporary covert warehouse from where trucks are later used in taking the drug for inter-State distribution,” Ofoyeju .

NDLEA’s Director of Operations and General Investigations, Mr. Olugbenga Mabo, who coordinated operations, said in Ekiti State alone, cannabis weighing 1.5 million kg was destroyed in two cannabis plantations. In Edo, 9,300kg was intercepted and destroyed while 19,675kg was intercepted in a truck in Delta State.
Mabo said, “Two trucks containing 2,103kg of cannabis were seized in Lokoja, Kogi State. The cases are under investigation.

“The interception of a truck carrying a forty-foot container loaded with 19,675kg along the Amai Road, Obiaruku, Delta State by our officers at the Delta State Command and two trucks containing 2,103kg of cannabis by the Kogi State Command is impressive.

Chairman of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, said the arrest of Obi was a reward for painstaking investigation.

“He was under investigation by the agency for several months. This is an era of protracted and diligent investigation that will expose illicit drug activities. I am delighted with the success of the painstaking surveillance carried out by officers in ‘Operation Weed Eater’,” Giade stated.

ASSAILANTS MURDERED OGUN EX-CHIEF JUDGE'S DAUGHTER

Mrs.Ola Adeola, a lawyer and insurance practitioner, was allegedly killed by assailants on Saturday, December 13, at her residence Omisore Lane, Oniru Estate, Victoria Island area of Lagos State. Adeola, was the daughter of a former Chief Judge of Ogun State and Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Ebenezer Craig.
.

Meanwhile, on the Facebook page of the lawyer, our correspondent observed that tributes from friends and colleagues expressing their shock at the incident had been pouring in.

A woman, Mrs. Folakemi Lapite, wrote, “Ola, my darling friend and sister. This is too much. What a miserable life. I can’t believe you are no more. We all will miss you. It is over.”

Another friend, Mrs. Lola Alayande, said, “Little did I know that I was seeing you for the last time at our quarterly Eagles fellowship at the Oriental Hotel last week Sunday, December 7. This is all a bad dream. We now live in a world infested with demons. God help us all.”

Another person, Mr. Lai Oriowo, wrote, “I am so much in shock. She was my name sake. She was always ever cheerful and full of smiles whenever I came across her. It is a horrible world we live in. Rest in perfect peace.”

Adeola’s throat was reportedly slashed. However, it was learnt that immediately the incident occurred, Adeola’s driver and the housemaid allegedly fled the apartment before the police eventually arrested the duo, but the housemaid was still on the run.

Meanwhile, it was also gathered that the lawyer’s corpse had been deposited in a morgue.
A gardener in the estate, who did not want his name in print, also told our correspondent that he believed the assailants were successful in killing Adeola as a result of an insider’s connivance.

He said, “The men came in through someone close to the woman. That was why they had access to her apartment and carried out their evil act without raising any suspicion. I believe the police, who have arrested two of the woman’s close workers, will unravel the killers.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were ongoing on the matter at the State Department of Criminal Investigations.

He said, “The case has been transferred to the SDCI, Yaba, for further investigation. Two persons have also been arrested by the police in connection with the murder. The woman indeed died a gruesome death, but the police are working to fish out the killers.”
