UNIVERSITY DECLARES CORPS MEMBER WANTED OVER N30M FRAUD

The Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola, has declared a corps member serving in Zamfara State, Fidelis Chalokwo, wanted over N30m varsity school fees fraud involving 940 students.

The affected students were considered ineligible by the bursary department of the university to sit for the examination because they had reportedly not yet paid their school fees.

According to the Students Union Government of the institution on Tuesday, preliminary investigations into the N30m school fees fraud linked Chalokwo, a former student of the university, now performing his NYSC programme in Zamfara, of executing 70 per cent of the fraud.

“More than 70 per cent of the students swindled of their school fees said they paid to Fidelis Chalokwo, who is now performing his NYSC programme in Zamfara,” said Abubakar Lawan, the SUG Vice-President.

He added that Chalokwo who was wanted to account for his crime, claimed he had left the country. The SUG VP said the varsity believed the suspect was still in the country and in Zamfara.

The Dean, Student Affairs, MAUTECH, Yola, Dr. Haruna Lawan, said over N30m was involved, adding that most of the students, instead of using their Automated Teller Machine cards to make the payments, gave cash to the online vendors who turned out to be fraudsters.

He said the least of the school fees involved was N30,700, 000 while other victims of the scams paid as much as N37,800 in school fees which never hit the school account.

However, Chalokwo, posting on his Facebook page, said the management of MAUTECH was trying to cover its ineptitude by using the 940 students to make up for its shortfall in revenues.

He dismissed any wrongdoing on his part.

He said, “The university should instead get the incompetent Flexisaf to account for the 940 failed registration rather than its current manhunt for me and my colleagues. But whatever you want to believe, please, note that my colleagues and I successfully paid your fees and registered for your courses for 2016 session.

“Let the FLEXISAF ICT explain the rest. It is a pity that the school bursar or management or whosoever is encouraging the manhunt of students cannot have a deep introspection and get the incompetent FLEXISAF to account for whatever losses the school probably must have recorded. The dubious list of 940 failed registration is the worst conspiracy theory ever.”

BELGIUM HEALTHCARE SYSTEM ONE OF THE WORLD'S BEST

New hospital,Kortrijk
If you're ill or having to go to hospital ranges from mild worry to a life-threatening experience; the good news is that Belgium, is a country with one of the world’s best healthcare system .

In Belgium there are public and private hospitals (hôpitaux/ziekenhuisen), university hospitals and polyclinics. You can also walk into ‘emergency outpatients’ for immediate treatment; though as in other countries, do not use this as a GP replacement.

In case of emergency, call the pan-European emergency number 112 (or 114 hearing assisted), free of charge from any phone, for any life-threatening situation. When you call they will need to know the type of emergency, address (municipality, street, house number, locality, etc.) and the number of people in danger.
An ambulance will take you to the nearest hospital but you will typically have to pay for this service, unless you have special or private health insurance that covers this.
Other emergency numbers:
Medical service  – 100.
Emergency doctor – 1307.
On-call pharmacy – 09 001 05 00 / 07 066 01 60.

Pharmacy is called a pharmacie or apotheek and you’ll recognise them by the green neon cross outside. They are usually open from Monday to Friday, often on Saturday mornings and on a rotating emergency service on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and out-of-hours.

DOCTORS
Doctors are known as médecins or artsen. They are well trained and required by law to keep up-to-date with the latest medical developments.

Patients are free to register with a doctor of their choice, but registration is not compulsory. People often make “familiarisation” appointments with doctors before they enrol at their practice, so that they can determine if they like the doctor’s manner.
Patients must pay GP’s and consultant doctors directly in cash or by cheque each time they visit them.

Most Belgian Belgian doctors do not employ administrative to take phone calls or make appointments, which means that they often take calls during a consultation.

Belgian doctors do not tend to discuss types of treatment or answer patients concerns. Some doctors will only see patients who have made an advance appointment known as a rendezvous or astral, others hold ‘walk-in’ consultations using a supermarket-style queuing system and some do a combination of the two. All doctors make house calls and some will only see sick patients at home in an attempt to keep their surgeries “germ-free.”

Embassies usually keep lists of doctors who can work in your language, otherwise many doctors have a good understanding of English.

HOSPITALS

Belgium has a wide choice of hospitals and clinics with a total of 141 public and private general hospitals which are managed by universities, religious organisations, health insurance funds or social welfare organisations. The hospitals, which are open 24/7, can be identified by a sign showing a white H on a blue background. Large hospitals have an emergency centre, a maternity ward and separate sections dedicated to the treatment of children and the elderly. Smaller, specialised hospitals only offer care for specific
target groups like patients with neurological disorders. Elderly people can also find the care adapted to their needs in geriatric hospitals.

You can also be referred to a day hospital, where you receive specific surgery and are allowed to return home the same day, under certain conditions. At polyclinics, specialists offer consultations or small treatments, without the need for an overnight stay. Both day hospitals and polyclinics are usually departments of ageneral hospital.

EMERGENCIES

In an emergency, call 100 or 112 and an ambulance will take you to the nearest emergency
centre. The Belgian compulsory health insurance scheme reimburses 50% of the cost of
emergency health service transport.

SPECIALIST

You may arrange to see a specialist of your choice; it’s not essential to have a referral from
a general practitioner, although he or she can advise you.

PHARMACIES

Chemists are ubiquitous in Belgium – look for the green cross sign. Most pharmacies operate normal working hours, with a number providing emergency 24/7 cover on a rota basis. Again, you can find this information in local and free papers. Medical prescriptions must be paid for on collection and the chemist issues a receipt for reimbursement purposes.

DENTISTS

The majority of dentists in Belgium are private. They have an agreed fee scale agreement, which sets the level of reimbursement for patients for basic treatment. For any specialist work, such as crowns and bridges, the dentist may ask how you will pay and offer you different quotes. To qualify for reimbursement you’ll need to visit the dentist at least once a year.

MENTAL HEALTH

You don’t need a referral from your GP before approaching a psychiatrist, psychotherapist
or counsellor, but it is advisable to ask for their advice first. There are 68 psychiatric hospitals and an attentive ear and professional advice are also readily at hand through the non-profit CHS.

CHS provides a confidential 24/7 information and crisis telephone service, staffed by a team of trained volunteers under the supervision of professional therapists. The mental health centre, in Brussels, has a professional staff of psychologists, psychiatrists and educational specialists.

EUTHANASIA

In September 2002, Belgium became the second country in the world to pass euthanasia
legislation. Patients must be over 18 years of age and if a person is not in the terminal stages of their illness, a third medical opinion needs to be sought.

ABORTION

Abortion is legal until the 12th week of pregnancy and women are required to have counselling prior to the abortion.

ADDICTION

People struggling with addiction can seek help from their local chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous or drugs helpline Infor-Drogues.

MAN WHO SPECIALIZES IN REPACKAGING AND SELLING EXPIRED PRODUCTS ARRESTED IN LAGOS !

Joseph Udeh, owner of Jouf Nigeria Limited, located at No. 10 Faith Street, off Comfort Oboh Street, Kirikiri Road, Apapa, Lagos, has been apprehended by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) for dealing in the repackaging and sales of expired products.

SON’s Director of Monitoring & Compliance, Engr. Bede Obayi, who took journalists round a twin four-storey building located in Kirikiri Town, Lagos on Monday said they got to know of Udeh’s dealings following a tip-off by members of the public.

“We acted on the intelligence we received from well-meaning Nigerians. You can see the volume of expired products here and imagine the implication for our society in terms of health issues.

When somebody buys expired cream, what does it show? You are applying cream that the active ingredient has gone and that may cause reactions on the skin.

More importantly, you are dealing with products that children use. Look at baby diapers that expired in 2015. Imagine what a product that expired in 2015 will do to a baby if used in 2017,” Obayi said.

Obayi, who said most of the products are popular brands imported into the country, added:

Perhaps they went overseas to buy these products that are close to their expiry dates and shipped them down here, because they have ready markets where people can buy.

This four-storey building of eight flats with the toilets, bathrooms and all available spaces (is) filled with expired products. That tells you the enormity of the crime this person is committing.

Look at this wrapper for disinfectant. What they do is to pick the expired ones and use this wrapper with new expiry dates to wrap it. When you have the old products inside this wrap that carries 2018 as expiry date, you will not know you are buying cloned products. The products have lost their active ingredients and efficacy.

Udeh claimed that he was waiting for officials of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), to come and destroy the expired products.

“We invite NAFDAC every year to come and destroy the expired goods but they do not come as often as we need them to and sometimes when they come, they would insist on destroying only a limited number, two truckloads of goods, maybe,” he said.

Responding to Udeh’s claim the Public Relations Officer of NAFDAC, Christy Obiazikwor, said the man is using the agency as an excuse to cover up for his crime.

“What he is saying is not even logical. If he invited NAFDAC to destroy the products, why is he then changing label on them?” she told PUNCH.

Reacting to Udeh’s claim, Obayi said “What we have seen here is a dubious warehouse or hideout where people are churning out expired products for the markets.”

Obayi, who said most of the products have entered the market, added that as investigation continues, SON will recall those already sold out.

“We have our offices throughout the nation and are going to escalate the recall process immediately, where we will get all the details of their transaction, so that anywhere these products are, we will pick them with the cost to the importer.

SON cannot accept this and those who are out to kill Nigerians. We will not allow them to be selling things like this, killing people in the name of merchandising.

We don’t want to continue to see people with illnesses caused by people who are out to kill by changing expiry dates,” he said. This arrest was made on this same date in March.

BREAKING: OBA AKIOLU'S PALACE ON FIRE (VIDEO)

There was reportedly a fire outbreak at Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu's palace, earlier today. The Lagos Monarch was immediately taken to a safety place, as the Lagos State Fire Service were alleged to be on their way to the Palace.

However, most people are linking the fire incidence, to what he did to the Ooni of Ife at a function recently.
