 Nigeria's former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has sacked staff of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
In a letter by its Head of Human Resources, Administration and Procurement, Olanike Ogunleye, the management of the OPL said the organisation was overwhelmed by the adverse effects of the Coronavirus pandemic and had found it hard to sustain its workforce.

The letter reads in part, "As you are aware, the current COVID-19 pandemic has had a toll on all our business significantly. This has resulted to making some difficult business decisions. Due to this situation, we regret to inform you that your employment will be put on hold till further notice.  

"You are to hand over all company properties in your possession to the human resource department, who shall do a confirmation of the exit clearance process before your final entitlements (if any) would be paid."

Before laying the workers off on Friday, the OPL had been owing several months of salaries.

A worker, who spoke with SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity said, "They have been owing salaries since last year. They will pay one and it’s going to be after 3-4 months that they will pay another one. We have workers collecting less than N30,000 and they refer to those collecting N50, 000 as senior staff and they are still owing.

"This year, they have paid just January salary and half of April salary which was paid on 20th of April."

Obasanjo was President of Nigeria for eight years from 1999 to 2007.

VERA UWAILA OMOZUWA:UNIBEN STUDENT THAT WAS BRUTALLY RAPED AND KILLED WHILE READING INSIDE A CHURCH!

Vera Uwaila Omozuwa,22,100Level student of Microbiology at the University of Benin, Edo State,has been brutally raped and killed inside a church in the city while reading.

The tragic incident, which happened three days ago, according to friends,on May 27, inside a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) near Ikpoba Hill in Benin.

Omozuwa was said to have gone into the place of worship to read in preparation for resumption of school after spending months at home due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While reading in the church, she was said to have been attacked and raped after which her head was smashed with a fire extinguisher which left her unconscious.

Despite being rushed to the intensive care unit of a hospital, Omozuwa couldn't make it as she succumbed to the injuries sustained during the savage attack.

Friends and all those, who knew her closely during her lifetime, have been paying tribute and calling for the perpetrators of the crime to be brought to justice.

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing away of our loved one, friend, sister and course mate.

"She was raped on her way home from church and had her head smashed with a fire extinguisher in broad day light around Ikpoba Hill, Benin City. This happened yesterday, May 30, 2020," one friend wrote.

A Twitter user with the handle @Weezard2 wrote, "Now this is a girl that just got admission, hasn't even done matriculation, and she was murdered in church. 

"She's a newly admitted student of University of Benin, Microbiology Department. #justiceForUwa."

Also commenting on the incident, another Twitter user with the handle @MohammedBlack_ said, "Saddening how our community gradually becomes unsafe for us. People getting killed on a daily frivolously.

"May Uwa's soul rest in peace and I hope her family ever finds the strength to bear this loss. This is for all of us. Hopefully, the perpetrators are caught! #justiceForUwa."

In his own tribute on Twitter, OptomDr0812 said, "I had high hopes that you will make it, I told your mum to be strong, you are just too soft to go through such excruciating pain.

"You fought with those animals, you fought to stay alive in ICU, please don't rest until those demons are caught. #justiceforuwa."

FORMER DIRECTOR GENERAL OF IMO BROADCASTING CORPORATION STABBED HIS 75-YEAR OLD WIFE TO DEATH !

A respected octogenarian indigene of the community and former Director General, of Imo Broadcasting Corporation, IBC, Mr. Theophilus C. Okere, reportedly stabbed his 75-year old wife, Beatrice, to death!This sad incident happened at Amafor, Imerienwe community in Ngor Okpala local government area of Imo State.
The story, for some people, was that it was one of the many fake news items in the social space, while a number of others branded the emerging report as a tale from fantasy.

Truth is that not many people, including the stunned villagers, believed the story, especially when the unfettered and palpable marital bliss between the couple, which reportedly spanned  a period of over 50 years, was taken into reckoning.
Somehow, the rumour not only refused to fade, but grew stronger by every passing minute. The Okere family country home, became a Mecca of sorts, as people trooped to the gory scene to confirm the veracity or otherwise, of the equally gory news they heard.

The news network ultimately, continued to multiply, as more villagers confirmed the incident. Apprehension and confusion immediately and understandably, enveloped the community. With this development, the sordid incident became more prominent in the social media, and the troubled community became the cynosure of eyes!
A trip to the community, raised the issue of poor access road. It gave Saturday Vanguard an insight into what the villagers pass through on a daily basis, but this is the story for another day.

When Saturday Vanguard visited the community, some villagers were seen in groups, discussing the incident. However, not many of them were favourably disposed to discuss the issue with Saturday Vanguard.
A villager, who eventually agreed to speak on strict grounds of anonymity, after much pressure, described the incident as “unbelievable and most unfortunate”
His words: “The incident is unbelievable and most unfortunate. I feel very bad to think that Ndaa T.C, like most villagers fondly called him, stabbed his wife to death.

“I am aware that the couple have lived together for more than 50 years. The family was a model for a lot of us. We all looked forward to living like Ndaa T. C and his wife.

“His wife retired from Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo. She was very pleasing character, very religious and a respected woman leader in the community. She was a leader of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Imerienwe.”

Another story was weaved around the incident. The villagers were overheard, saying that “the man has been suffering from dimentia for awhile”.
Again, a villager’s words: “Ndaa T. C has been battling with dimentia. I am also aware that his family has been battling to take proper care of the medical condition.
“Those, who arrived the crime scene earlier than myself, told me that the man did not even know that his wife was dead. We have never witnessed this sort of occurrence in our community, within available memory.

“When Ndaa T. C was asked why he stabbed his wife to death, he simply replied that she was sleeping. There is every reason to believe that he was not even conscious of what he did. Let me also recall that on one of the recent Sundays, when Ndaa T. C went to church, he announced that his car was missing! But his car was neatly parked in his house.”
A medical journal described dimentia as a disease condition characterised by a decline in memory, language, problem solving and other thinking skills, which affects a person’s ability to perform all activities.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that the man’s family had been managing the medical condition for some time.
Another sad incident in the family is that the former IBC-DG’s second son, Emmanuel Okere, died in February this year.
“The young man’s corpse has been lying in the morgue since February, before this unfortunate incident”, the villager said.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Orlando Ikeokwu, has not only confirmed the incident to newsmen in Owerri, but also affirmed that the suspect is in their custody and the Command has commenced serious investigation into the matter.

Tessy Yembra, the dancer who added some flavor to Sir Shina Peters’ monster hit song and music creation, Afro Juju is dead.
 The mother and grandmother who is always happy died on Children’s Day – May 27, 2020 – after allegedly battling ill health for some time.

The sad news of Lady Tessy’s demise was shared by media mogul, Dele Momodu, on his Instagram page.

Her burial details were yet to be announced as at the time of writing this.

PRINCE JOACHIM OF BELGIUM TESTED POSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS AFTER ATTENDING A PARTY WITH GIRLFRIEND IN SPAIN

Prince Joachim of Belgium has tested positive for Coronavirus after attending a party with his girlfriend and 25 others  in the southern city of Cordoba,Spain on May 26.

 

According to spokesperson for the Belgian Royal Palace said on Saturday;

 
Prince Joachim, the nephew of King Philippe of Belgium and ninth in line to the throne, attended the party on Tuesday in a private house in the city of Cordoba, which breached social distancing rules as the maximum number of people permitted to meet is currently 15 in the Andalusian city.

 

He was to have arrived in Madrid two days earlier for a business trip but then took a high-speed train to Cordoba, where his long-term girlfriend Victoria Ortiz grew up.

 

The 27 people who attended the party are in quarantine and the police are investigating the event with a view to levying a fine of between €600 and €10,000.

 

Prince Laurent of Belgium, another of Joachim's uncles, confirmed the virus has been contracted by at least one member of his family.

 

He said: 'We do not know how, but the coronavirus has entered our household.'

 

'For weeks now, we have hardly gone out – only to shop and for sports.'

 

Speaking about the party, Rafaela Valenzuela, the Spanish government's sub-delegate in Cordoba, said: 'I feel surprised and indignant, given that at a moment of national mourning for so many dead, an incident of this type stands out.

 

'It's completely irresponsible, because that number of people multiplied could cause an outbreak, and that would mean that Córdoba, after passing to Phase 2, would have to take a step back.

 

'That is unforgivable. The police are investigating not just the observance of confinement measures, but also the breaking of other rules, given that we are still under a state of alarm. The virus is still out there.'

We live in the most incarcerated nation on planet Earth,” he said, adding there was a weariness of getting mere “trickles of justice”.Merritt said.
