PERSONALITY OF THE MONTH: LADI DOSEI KWALI (1925-1983) P.HD. MBE, OON

Ladi Dosei Kwali (1925-1983) , was unarguably the pioneer of modern pottery in Nigeria. Born to Gbagyi parents in 1925 in the village of Kwali, located in the Gwari region of present-day Abuja,  Nigeria, where pottery used to be a common occupation among women. Her first name means "born on Sunday" while her second name is the name of her hometown.

Probably she is the best known of the Abuja potters. Making pots was women’s work in Kwali and the entire Gwari villages, therefore Ladi came to Abuja (the then Suleja) with knowledge of traditional Gwari pottery.
She did not at first take to the idea of using wheels and kilns and the other paraphernalia of the European potter, but proved to have a natural ability to throw. She was picked from her traditional home Kwali to the then Abuja the present Suleja because of her natural ability in making pots.

The Abuja Pottery Training Centre was established 1950 by an English potter, Michael Cardew, who was sent to the Abuja area by the then colonial government, ostensibly to improve the quality of local work. But he found himself, for the next 15 years, in a symbiotic working relationship with local potters, in which he taught and was taught by potters like Ladi Kwali.
While Cardew introduced wheels and kilns to the centre, he also learnt about traditional firing methods and ornamentation. Kwali on the other hand, was initially reluctant to adapt to the wheel, preferring the spiralled coil method of building pots. She however, discovered she had a natural flair for the wheel. Cardew encouraged her to decorate her work, something she had not done before, and he even fired some of her traditional work in the Abuja kiln.

In 1958, 1959, and 1962, Kwali's work was exhibited in London and her contributions helped keep the Pottery Centre afloat. She was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1963 and was awarded an honorary degree by Ahmadu Bello University in 1977. Her pottery was also displayed during Nigeria's independence celebrations in 1960. In 1980, the Nigerian Government invested her with the insignia of the Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA), the highest national honour for academic achievement. Kwali is the first and only woman to appear on Nigerian currency: her portrait is on the back of the twenty-naira note.
She received a number of other honours in her lifetime, including being made an Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 1981, and a Silver Award for Excellence during the tenth International Exhibition for Ceramic Art at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. The Abuja Training Pottery Centre was renamed the Ladi Kwali Pottery Centre, and major roads in Abuja and Niger State are named after her.

Ladi was later to become a very popular member of the touring lecture team; her easy nature and ability to communicate made her well liked and appreciated in Europe, Britain and America. She became Nigeria’s best known potter and has been honoured in many ways; she was given a doctorate.

By the time she died in 1983, Dr Ladi Kwali was Nigeria’s best known potter. She left a rich legacy of her work and a school of ‘students’ who picked up from where she left at the Abuja Pottery Training Centre. Over the next decade, her ornamentation skills became more sophisticated, and probably because of improved firing methods, she had the opportunity to exhibit her work in Europe in 1958, 1959 and 1962.

Her pottery was also displayed during Nigeria’s independence celebrations in 1960. Dr Ladi Kwali remained associated with the Abuja pottery works till she died. She gave lectures and demonstrations at home and abroad on her craft throughout her career.

HA! EKITI MONARCHS ACCUSED OF COLLECTING BRIBE !

Below is a press release from Governor Ayo Fayose's aides

Ogun State born Maxwell Olusegun Adegbenro,  Special Assistant on Social Media to the immediate past governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi has accused traditional rulers in Ekiti State, who attended forum organised by Concerned Yoruba Elders in Ile-Ife on Friday, of collecting N150, 000 bribe each to attend the event.

Maxwell Adegbenro made this allegations on his Facebook page at about 11:30 am on Saturday.He berated the Obas, including the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe of travelling to Ile-Ife to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan, saying;

"The Ekiti Obas can receive the President in their home state and not OAU at a function organised by a group in close association with PDP."
Adegbenro, who is  Dr Fayemi’s spokesperson on social media must have echoed the position of the former governor on the traditional rulers' visit to Ile-Ife on Friday to attend the event.

He said; "And our own traditional rulers in their borrowed robe suddenly filled Gov Fayose escort to endorse Jonathan and not to receive him.
"Was Jonathan coming to Ekiti? How may Ondo State Traditional rulers graced the programme?

"How many Osun State Obas, Ogun and Oyo suddenly became President Jonathan convoy team to a meeting supposedly organised to rally support for him?
"You and I know why these Obas were there. They may have been lucky turally deceived by Fayose in presenting entire Ekiti before President Jonathan as peoples choice and candidate.

"Traditional rulers are separable of despotic politics. An interplay that has no moral, cultural ground is justifiably an ills to our values and norms. Egbon, that is my point. Where then is their integrity. So, again I heard they were paid 150k each."

Reacting, Special Assistant to Ekiti State Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka described the comment as an insult on the entire people of Ekiti.

Olayinka, who demanded an immediate retraction of the statement and apology by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, said Governor Fayose will not stand and watch anyone dragging the traditional institution in Ekiti State in the mud

POLITRICKS: TELL MR PRESIDENT TO STOP THIS CROCODILE'S TEAR

Like President Barack Obama recently said, “election time is usually a time for reflection". It is a time politician do lie so as to win your confidence, cajole you for your vote, promise you heaven and earth...nice dual carriageway first class hospital, uninterrupted power supply, more employment for the youth , Bla! Bla!! Bla!!! . It all lies, useless wishful thinking, they just want you vote and sympathy to keep themselves in power so as to better their lives and shares our nation wealth among themselves and cronies.

Let me tell you, when politicians want to deceive the people they throw up sentiments. Just imagine, how come that President Goodluck Jonathan suddenly realised that his regret is inability to have a South-West as a Speaker?
“One of the problems I faced in the National Assembly is that I felt the right thing should be done because our party, the PDP, has a formula.”

“We have six geo-political zones in the country and when the President emerges from one of the geo-political zones, the Vice-President emerges from another geo-political zone, the rest core offices, the Senate President, the Speaker, Secretary to Federal Government, the chairman of the party must come from different geo-political zones.

“The idea is that, whenever we are distributing board positions and some of these appointments, whenever we are appointing ministers, all these people sit to take decisions. In that case we want all the geo-political zones to be in the inner caucus that take critical decisions.

“The last time, it was difficult for me because I insisted that the Southwest must get the Speaker. Of course, I couldn’t go through with it because some of us within the Southwest didn’t want it, based on some personal reasons. I am still suffering from that till today.”

President Goodluck Jonathan made the above statement while speaking at a Yoruba Unity Summit at the Obafemi Awolowo Uni, Ile-Ife, trust Nigerian they always have someone to blame for their mistake ....he  attributed his failure to the selfishness of some Yoruba leaders!
Now, you selfish Yoruba leaders it is now time to defend yourselves!

It would be recalled that in 2011, Aminu Tambuwal, who is from the Northwest, was then in the good book of our dear Mr President, as late Afrobeat King Fela put it, the ‘Rigimor’ government machinery works together to defeat Mulikat Akande, a Yoruba from the South West, to emerge the House Speaker, the rest is now history.

As President Obama put it: “This election is about the past vs. the future. It's about whether we settle for the same divisions and distractions and drama that passes for politics today or whether we reach for a politics of common sense and innovation, a politics of shared sacrifice and shared prosperity. There are those who will continue to tell us that we can't do this, that we can't have what we're looking for, that we can't have what we want, that we're peddling false hopes. But here is what I know.

I know that when people say we can't overcome all the big money and influence in Washington, I think of that elderly woman who sent me a contribution the other day, an envelope that had a money order for $3.01 along with a verse of scripture tucked inside the envelope. So don't tell us change isn't possible. That woman knows change is possible. When I hear the cynical talk that blacks and whites and Latinos can't join together and work together, I'm reminded of the Latino brothers and sisters I organized with and stood with and fought with side by side for jobs and justice on the streets of Chicago. So don't tell us change can't happen. When I hear that we'll never overcome the racial divide in our politics, I think about that Republican woman who used to work for Strom Thurmond, who is now devoted to educating inner city-children and who went out into the streets of South Carolina and knocked on doors for this campaign. Don't tell me we can't change. Yes, we can. Yes, we can change. Yes, we can.’’

So, all of you political jobbers, tell Mr President to stop this fake crocodile’s tear he is shedding, the reason being that ‘ it is too late to cry when the head is off. Of course in any place where political offices are shared not by merit, but by such subjective factors as ethnocentrism, favouritism, chauvinism, cronyism, cult of mediocrity and compromise, the result is always inefficiency, ineffectiveness, incompetence, and utter failure. In Nigeria, we have failed because of those primordial factors we have espoused in our national agenda.. The country has become a dystopian wasteland in spite of her God-given natural resources because we put merit in the back burner.’

I rest my case.
