BILL TO PROHIBIT TRIBAL MARKS PASSES SECOND READING

A Bill for an Act to provide for the Prohibition of Facial Mutilation, Offences, Prosecution and Punishment of Offenders on Tuesday passed second reading in the Senate, PM News reports.

The Bill is also for the Protection of victims under threat of facial mutilation and other related Matters.
Sen. Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi), who sponsored the bill, said that there was no doubt that Africans of old used tribal marks as a means of proper identification.

Leading debate on the bill, Melaye said in those days, members of the same village, tribe or lineage had the same tribal marks. Melaye said that the hometown and lineage of a child or anyone with tribal marks were immediately identified, while outsiders who did not have such marks were also spotted.

He further explained that parents also used tribal marks to lay credence to the legitimacy of their children.
However, the lawmaker said “all these reasons cannot be scientifically proven, and hence cannot enjoy the support for this harmful practice’’.

“The irony of these marks is that it makes victims subjects of mockery by friends. Imagine someone being called a tiger simply because of the thick cheeks resulting from facial marks. “ These people have been subjected to different reactions. Some have lamented the marks that are bequeathed on them as generational inheritance.

“ Many have cursed the day which this dastardly act was performed on them. “Many of the grown adults have confessed that the most terrific debacle of their lives is their tribal marks. Some have become eunuchs because of this stigma. “Some of them have developed low self-esteem and most times treated with scorn and ridicule including rejection by the
female folks.

Melaye stated that besides the health implication of the practice, it was an infringement on the rights of children,
adding that every Nigerian child deserved the right to live.

DINO MELAYE: HARVARD UNIVERSITY DENIES HE EVER STUDIED THERE ....

Harvard University Denies Senator Dino Melaye Ever Studied There, Only Attended A One-Week Seminar
Harvard University in Boston, United States, on Tuesday refuted a claim by Senator Dino Melaye that he was at any time educated at the prestigious Ivy League school, the Registrar’s Office immediately dismissing the suggestion as soon as an official cross-checked it.

Senator’s posturing is also reflected on his LinkedIn account and has been previously showcased stated in (an interview with the media)(in media interviews).

The Harvard Kennedy School of Educational Leadership confirmed that Dino Melaye presented himself in November 2016 only for a one-week seminar in leadership. Asked if that qualifies as academic achievement, the respondent said "No," adding that the seminar also doesn't qualify anyone to become a Harvard alumnus.

Following a motion by Senator Ali Ndume asking the Senate’s Ethics and Privileges Committee to investigate allegations that Melaye didn't properly graduate from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria, Melaye had bragged that he has at least eight postgraduate degrees.

Mr. Melaye has been caught in a major certificate scandal in which Examination Officers at the Department of Geography, ABU, where Melaye took undergraduate classes, confirmed that he did not graduate from the institution. They went further to say that the documents he presented to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were manipulated between Melaye his then Head of Department, Prof. David Ogbonna.

The Examination Officers pointed out that Mr. Melaye was registered in the university as "Daniel Jonah O. Melaye," a name they said was neither in the graduation brochure of ABU when his set graduated, nor found in any other graduation document. In particular, the Exam officers pointed to how during his final year, the HOD added 2 course units to boost Melaye's CGPA.

Mr. Melaye had reportedly bribed university officials to produce fake transcripts, on the basis of which he attended a program at the University of Jos, the University of Abuja, and currently at ABU. Several of Melaye's classmates and comrades also disputed his claim that he was a Students' Union Government President at ABU, at best, they stated Melaye was a president of the National Association of Geography Students (NAGS) from where he was impeached for fraud.

Another claim that the Senator studied at the London School of Economics could not be verified as of the time of going to press.

PHOTOS: 35-YEAR OLD MEDICAL DOCTOR WHO JUMPED INTO LAGOS LAGOON YESTERDAY !

Allwell Orji, 35, medical doctor at the Isolo branch of Mt. (Mount) Sinai Hospital, yesterday jumped into the Lagos lagoon when he was going to attend a Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) meeting. The incident occoured on Third Mainland Bridge around 4:45pm .

Orji, who left from his house at Abule Ijesha in Yaba, was said to have told his driver, Henry Ita, to parked his Nissan Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked LND476EE at the Adeniji Adele end of the bridge on the excuse that he wanted to pee.

As he came down, the doctor was said to have climbed the bridge’s rail guide and jumped into the lagoon.

A commercial bus passenger, who gave his name as Uche Magnus, said the doctor jumped into the ocean immediately after he came down from his vehicle.

Magnus said:

“I saw everything clearly from where I sat in the commercial bus I was in. The man came down from his jeep and jumped into the water instantly. We all screamed and begged the commercial bus driver to stop. I saw the man when he jumped but nobody could identify the spot where he drowned in the ocean.”

In the ensuing confusion, Ita was said to have called Oji’s mother and pastor. Both arrived the scene some 30 minutes after. It was learned that the sympathisers at the scene called the Lagos Police emergency unit, which deployed Rapid Response Squad (RRS) riders and marine police to the scene.

The body of the deceased is still being sought for.
