COURT ORDERS THE FORFEITURE OF PATIENCE JONATHAN $5.9 MILLION

Federal high court in Lagos, on Wednesday granted a fresh ex-parte application ordering the forfeiture of 5.9 million dollars belonging to Patience Jonathan, former first lady.

The judge’s order comes less than 24 hours after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) withdrew an application seeking to stop her from having access to the money, which is in Skye Bank.

In December 2016, Olatoregun had ordered that the account be frozen, but on April 6, she directed that the account be unfrozen.

Subsequently, Jonathan tried to withdraw some money from the account, but she was not allowed to do so owing to a stay of execution application filed by the EFCC.

Though one of her lawyers later said she withdrew $100, 000.

On Tuesday, Rotimi Oyedepo, counsel to the EFCC, told the court that he was withdrawing the application.

He said the anti-graft agency had decided not appeal against the order unfreezing the account.

In return, Ifedayo Adedipe, counsel to Jonathan, withdrew a contempt application against Skye Bank, which had declined allowing the former first lady access to her account.

The judge then granted the requests for the withdrawal of the applications.

REDEEMED CHURCH CHORISTER AND TWO OTHERS ARRESTED FOR KIDNAPPING

Operatives of Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command over the weekend arrested three suspected kidnappers fleeing from Ibadan to Lagos after collecting N3 million ransom.

The kidnappers (Adekunle Funsho (31), Charles Ezeilo (32) and Obioha Nnaji ) had after collecting the ransom fled to Lagos. The police in Ibadan after discovering that the kidnappers were heading to Lagos with the victim’s Toyota Highlander had radioed Lagos for assistance.

RRS officials on receiving the radio signal tracked the vehicle to Femi Shrine in Ikeja, from where the alleged suspects further moved the vehicle to a compound somewhere Abule Egba, Lagos.

It was there that, the officers arrested a suspect before recovering the Toyota Highlander, 2005 model with the registration number LND 954 EE.

The first suspect assisted the police in the arrest another suspect who was later apprehended in Femi' Shrine in Ikeja while another suspect simply identified as Theophilus is on the run.

According to one of the suspects, Adekunle Funsho, a fashion designer around Felele, Ibadan, where it was believed the kidnapping took place, “Theophilus handed over the car to me in Ibadan and told me to look for a buyer for the car.

I brought the car to Lagos because I know that I would get a buyer quickly for the car. The instruction from him was that I sell the Highlander at N800, 000:00”.

He stated further: “I got a buyer In Ondo State. He has bought a car from me before, a fairly clean Toyota Corolla. He bought it N550, 000:00. I took the car to him on Lagos - Ibadan Expressway, where he paid me before moving the car away.

Charles is my friend of over 5 years. We met at Redeemed Church, Ogba, where I was a chorister. I gave him the car to help me warehouse it for me to get a buyer. He took the car from me at Femi' Shrine to his house in Abule Egba.

The case has been taken up by Oyo State Anti - kidnapping team for further investigations.

I LOST RE-ELECTION BECAUSE OBAMA OTHERS SUPPORTED BUHARI~~ GEJ

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, says he lost the 2015 general election to President Buhari because Buhari had support from former US President Barack Obama, ex-British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Hollande.

In a book titled, "Against The Run of Play" which is set to be launched in Lagos on Friday, Chairman of ThisDay Editorial Board, Olusegun Adeniyi, quoted Jonathan to have said that the world leaders worked towards aiding President Buhari win the 2015 election.

"President Barack Obama and his officials made it very clear to me by their actions that they wanted a change of government in Nigeria and we’re ready to do anything to achieve that purpose. They even brought some naval ships into the Gulf of Guinea in the days preceding the election. I got on well with Prime Minister David Cameron but at some point, I noticed that the Americans were putting pressure on him and he had to join them against me. But I didn’t realise how far President Obama was prepared to go to remove me until France caved in to the pressure from America. But weeks to the election, he had also joined the Americans in supporting the opposition against me.

There was this blanket accusation that my body language was supporting corruption, a line invented by the opposition but which the media and civil society bought into and helped to project to the world. That was the same thing I kept hearing from the Americans without specific allegations.”
Jonathan stated that he decided to concede defeat after the election so as to avoid blood bath.

"Go and check the results from Kano. The Presidential election and that of National Assembly happened on the same day and same time. The National Assembly result reflected that about 800,000 people voted but that of the presidential reflected a vote of about 1.8 million. I had reports of what happened but I decided that for such to be accepted, it meant that those who called themselves my supporters must have colluded. I was betrayed by the very people I relied on to win the election.

In 2011 when Buhari did not campaign anywhere and could not have won the election, there was a spontaneous violent reaction that led to the death of several innocent people, including Youth Corps members. I asked myself: what would happen in a situation in which there was already internal and international conspiracy in his favor? I could not bear the thought of anybody dying, so I told myself I had only one option and that was to concede.” On his Fight against corruption, President Jonathan said he preferred investigating any of his officials accused of corruption before sanctioning them.

According to Jonathan, he ordered an investigation into the allegations that former Minister of Aviation, spent some public funds on the purchase of BMW bulletproof cars. Jonathan said after Oduah was investigated and indicted, he relieved her of her job, a situation that has caused her to hate him "I have been told that I should have made scapegoats of some officials so I would be seen to be fighting corruption, I usually subject them to investigations. You know Stella Oduah played a prominent role in my campaign in 2011.

But when the investigation I ordered was carried out and the indictment was confirmed, I had to relieve her of her position. Up till today, Stella hates me for her removal. No doubt, it was a very hard decision for me to take because I see her as a friend as I take all the people who work with me, but that was what leadership demanded. We live in a country where people fabricate stories about even those they don’t know, where rumor mongering is a national pastime.

I have heard stories about me that I find very shocking, stories that are untrue. Therefore, as a leader, it is my responsibility to verify stories before I act. That is why I am deliberative in what I do. The main problem I had was that the media and the civil society had conspired against me”he said

UK EMBASSY: NIGERIANS CAN NOW GET THEIR VISA SAME DAY

The British government has announced a special service for Nigerians which enables them to get their UK visa on the same day of application.

British High Commissioner, Mr. Paul Arkwright disclosed this at the 40th anniversary of Nigerian British Chamber of Commerce, NBCC, in Lagos.

Mr Arkwright while speaking at the event on Monday said the British embassy has made provision for visa applicants in Nigeria to get their visa on the same day or within five days of application.

He noted that the embassy as part of its special services has reduced the maximum turnaround time for all classes of visa application to 15 days.

“We have introduced a same day visa service – at a cost – for visas in Nigeria.

“We have also introduced a service that means you get a visa within five days, at a lower cost than the same day process.

“Our turnaround time for all other visas is 15 days. The key thing, however, is that all visitors to the UK, whether they are from Nigeria or anywhere else, must respect the law and the length of time their visa says they can stay in the UK.

“In 2016, around 140,000 Nigerians applied for visas to the UK. Of those that applied for student visas, 90 percent were successful.

“For those that applied for other visas, around 70 percent were successful. There are as many as 250,000 Nigerian nationals or dual Nigerian-British nationals living in the UK at the moment.

“Some claim the total Nigerian diaspora in the UK is well over a million. We want Nigerians to come to the UK. They come to do business, to study, to see family and to invest in our economy.”

RETURNEES: MORE NIGERIANS RETURNS FROM LIBYA !

Officials of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Agency for the Protection of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP),  National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) received 253 Nigerians (102 males, 140 females, 6 children and 5 infants)

They were brought back by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) after the Federal Government asked for its assistance after confirming that some Nigerians were willing to return home.

Addressing newsmen at the Hajj Camp wing of the airport where the returnees were profiled, the Director General of NEMA, Engr Mustapha Maihaja, represented by the Deputy Director, Search and Rescue, Dr. Abdullahi Onimode, said the deportees would be given some token to go back to their respective destinations.

'We are giving them some stipends. We need to let them realize that the country they left some years ago is not the same country they are meeting today. We have moved ahead and everybody now has equal opportunity to be the best you can be,' he said

He also advised those leaving the country in search of greener pastures to have a rethink and stay in the country to develop it.

Speaking to Vanguard, one of the returnees identified as Mary said that it was a miracle she returned safely back to Nigeria as she was being sold like a piece of merchandise in Libya.

According to her, 'They were selling some of us like wood from one guard who will take us to some destination and again sell us to another who will now be our new owner. That will take us again to some distance and say his contract with us has expired and again sell us to another person.'

She added that 'if you complain, they will ask you if you don’t want to go to Europe again. My brother, e no easy', she laughed.
