CATHOLIC CHURCH EXCOMMUNICATES A PRIEST WHO QUIT PRIESTHOOD

The Catholic Church in Nigeria has excommunicated a priest, Rev. Patrick Edet, who recently quit priesthood and stripped him of all power, rights and privileges accruing to a leader of the Church.

Recall that the popular priest, who served in the Catholic Diocese of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, had announced over a local radio station on August 2nd, that he was leaving the Catholic Church so he could be ‘free to serve God the way he wanted.’

In a general notice issued to parishioners on August 12, the Catholic Bishop of Uyo Diocese, John Ayah, advised them to stay away from Mr. Edet.

"I advise that no Catholic member should approach him to obtain any service or guidance henceforth in the name of the Church,” the bishop said.

"Any Catholic who attends his programme or identifies with him in any way does so at the risk of his or her Catholic faith and membership,” he said.

The Bishop said he was forwarding Mr. Edet’s resignation letter to Pope Francis for further directives on the matter.

Reverend Patrick Edet.  who ran a Pentecostal-style fellowship  in Uyo, said "..... Henceforth, I cease to be a Catholic Priest, in my spirit and in my soul... I forgive those who will criticize me, I live for God...I seek freedom for my soul. As I leave, I leave smiling, I AM SO HAPPY THAT I AM FREE".

“You cannot know God beyond that box. You cannot express God beyond that box. And any attempt for you to go beyond that box brings you label. The reason I am doing this is that I want to be right with God first. I want to go to heaven when I die,” he said.

T-moneyAdu, was found to have a number of credit cards and fraudulent documents at his home during a police raid in October last year.

The raid was part of a week-long initiative to tackle card fraud, after intelligence suggested he had been using compromised cards to buy electronic goods with a value of up to £15,000 to sell on.

Police research revealed the 38-year-old owner of Bigfoot Records & Entz, had a bank account which had been used in 2014 to receive £50,000 from a romance fraud. Further analysis revealed a £900,000 turnover in a bank account the previous year.

A trial at Inner London Crown Court found Adu guilty of disguising criminal property on Tuesday, July 4, having already pleaded guilty to converting criminal property, possession of a fraudulently obtained identification document and fraud by false representation.

Detective Constable Damian Ward, of the Dedicated Card and Payment Crime Unit (DCPCU), said:

“Adu was a career fraudster who had falsely obtained money through a variety of means and I am delighted with this conviction.”
