The Registrar/Chief Executive of the MDCN, Dr. Abdulmuni Ibrahim, disclosed in Abuja that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has arrested over 30 quack doctors, including those involved in illegal practice, while 14 of them have faced trial in court within four years of the establishment of its tribunal.
According to him, the number of training institutions in the country accredited by the council has increased from one, which was University College Hospital, Ibadan to 31 within the last 50 years.
“The council has successfully introduced indexing of medical students in medical schools to ensure that training institutions keep to their allotted admission quotas thereby ensuring that standard is maintained,” Ibrahim stressed.
While the council has instituted and enforced the continuous professional development programme since 2011, the medical and dental practitioners registered presently stand at over 70,000 from a little over 1,000 in 1963.
The chairman, Governing Board of MDCN, Prof Jonathan Azubuike, has appealed to the Federal Government to be allowed to do their job without frequent disruptions.
He explained that if all things were equal, the celebration should have taken place in 2013 adding that there was no council in existence last year and that explained the 50+ 1.
