According to him, Bello was taken to the police
station. The lawyer added that by the time Bello’s mother and younger brother
got information of his arrest and rushed down to the police station, the
Divisional Police Officer in charge of the station told them: “He don die” (he
is dead).
According to the DPO, while the police were
taking Bello somewhere in a van, he jumped off the moving van despite handcuffs
and died. But the family alleged that he was killed by police since the stories
of how he died were conflicting.
The Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura,
has intervened in the case. The governor was said to have instructed the police
to release Bello’s body to his family.
The police complied. Wuyep has filed an application to the Mararaba Magistrates’ Court for a Coroner’s Inquest into Bello’s death. The hearing comes up on December 22.
