which states that: “Everyone has the right to education and to have access to
continuing and vocational training” (Article 14)?
The Sakharov Prize
for Freedom of Thought has also gone to laureates fighting for gender equality,
particularly as regards the right of girls and women to education.
Hauwa
Ibrahim, the 2005 Sakharov Prize laureate, who became the first female lawyer
in Nigeria to win the prize. Today Hauwa defends people who otherwise would not
have any access to justice due to their illiteracy. Many of them are women
accused of adultery and condemned to death under Sharia law. In her statement, she said ‘’if
we invest in girls, we invest in our humanity’’.
