Our elder says, ‘charity
begins at home’. However, nowadays, charity begins from foreign land! Imagine,
the suffering meted out to staff of various national daily newspapers by their managements
over nonpayment of salaries ranging between six to one year!!!
According to vibrant award winning journalist,
Azuka Jebose, he wrote : ‘’Some mainstream
Nigerian national daily newspapers, owe their editorial staff almost one year
salaries. On Tuesday afternoon, staff of Nigeria's flamboyant national daily
newspaper, THISDAY, began to picket the organization, vowing not to return to
work until management pays the workers eight months of unpaid wages.
Nduka Obaigbenna is the publisher of ThisDay
Newspaper. He is very powerful within Nigeria's political establishment and widely connected internationally. Obaigbenna while owing staff
salaries lavishly organized various international seminars, presentations,
fashion and music shows: world leaders from Bill Clinton to Tony Blair and
Condoleezza Rice have guested in Obaigbenna's Arise/Thisday events.
These world leaders appearance fees are heavy price tags. Obaigbenna
must make full payments in foreign exchange and upfront, to book these leaders'
appearances for his events. These were done at the expense of paying his staff
salaries, thus punishing journalists and their families. Nduka Obaigbenna has a
record of not paying regular salaries: this record dates as far back as mid
80s, during THIS WEEK MAGAZINE days. Sadly journalists affected by his inhuman
abuse were scared or afraid of confronting their employer because of fear of
intimidation from such a powerful man in our dear Nigeria.
Tuesday, a new generation of
reporters took a stand against Nduka Obaigbenna and began a sit down strike
against ThisDay Newspaper org. Sadly, the Nigerian media are mute with regards
to reporting this strike because they fear Nduka's powerful wrath against their
media houses. Few hours ago, Obaigbenna paid staff three months arrears( he had
allegedly made differential or selective payments to some staff in the past),
This day staff returned to work.
National Daily Mirror newspaper owned by business man Braimoh Jimoh,
allegedly owe its staff six months of unpaid. salaries. Daily Independent
Newspaper, owned by former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, hasn't paid it's
staff in 15 months. These are the harsh circumstances the Nigerian
journalist/reporter is subjected to everyday by these employers: daily
frustrations and humiliation. Please Arise for the brave ThisDay Newspaper
journalists fighting to be paid their owed eight months salaries. Help share
this and let it go viral. They have families just like you and I. Every hard
working person deserves his or her earned wages’’.
