LAGOS HOSPITAL CHAINS WOMAN TO URINAL PIPE FOR INABILITY TO PAY MEDIDAL BILLS

A private hospital, Samaria Hospital, located in the Ikotun-Egbe area of Lagos state, has detained a woman, Jessica Ugwuoke for over one month due to the woman’s failure to offset her medical bills. The woman, detained since August 12, 2015, after she and her relatives said they could not afford to pay the bill for her Caesarean section (CS), is chained to a urinal pipe to prevent her from escaping.
According to the victim's husband Mr. Ugwuoke , he was initially asked to pay a sum of N30,000 for blood transfusion into his wife who was reported to have lost a lot of blood during labor. The victim however lost her child during a Caesarean section carried out by the hospital.
The victim said, the hospital did not inform them of the cost of the Caesarean section until after the surgery and her hospital bills amounted to N285,000.   It was learnt that the detained patient’s husband had pleaded with the hospital to release his wife, promising to seek a loan to pay her hospital expenses, but his request was declined by the hospital.
