On Friday 18th,
September, Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN said that 19 of the 36 states of the
federation have so far benefited from the workers’ salary bailout package.
However, two months after, the states are yet to effect this package!
A friend
wrote this thought provoking note to me “Toba,I think bloggers
should look into the bailout funds.
Where is the money given to the states?
What has the governors done with it? Workers were paid two months out of
several months owed them. Government resumed construction of road without
payment of lecturers salaries for 7 to 8 months going. Universities and staff
schools are sending staff children out of school bcos of nonpayment of school fees.
Where would they get the children school fee when they are not paid by the
government?”
The states
that benefited from the aid include Ekiti, Imo, Ebonyi, Ogun, Plateau,
Nassarawa, Sokoto, Edo, Oyo Kwara, Zamfara, Osun, Niger, Bauchi, Gombe, Abia,
Adamawa, Ondo, and Kebbi.
The main
purpose of the bailout was to enable the affected states to pay the backlog of
workers’ salary arrears.
