EXTRADITION NOTICE: NDLEA HAS NO ROLE TO PLAY...KASHAMU'S LAWYERS

Press statement from Kashamu's lawyers:

Our attention has been drawn to a press release by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) purporting to have served extradition proceedings on Senator-elect, Prince Buruji Kashamu.

We wish to state that the NDLEA has no role to play in extradition proceedings until a warrant of arrest has been issued by the court. It is the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice that initiates extradition proceedings after receiving a request by an order directed to the court and asking the court to take over the matter.

It is the court that will decide whether a warrant of arrest is necessary. It is the court that will consider all the evidence provided by the United States to see whether it satisfies the onus of proof and that it establishes that the person sough is the person that actually participated in the offence alleged.

In this case, the NDLEA is very jumpy, nervous and unsettled because it has exposed its unprofessionalism when before any extradition proceedings had been commenced at all, it invaded the home of Prince Kashamu, broke down his gates, doors and windows to gain access, harassed his infant children and pregnant wife and humiliated him in the presence of his family.

Clearly, the plan was not extradition but abduction and that plan failed only because it quickly came to the attention of the public.

The belated filing on Thursday, 28th May, 2015 of an application to the Federal High Court by the immediate past Attorney-General  of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke Bello, is an afterthought. And the lack of quality in the processes is indicative that it is a rushed job quickly done to save his face.

The pieces of evidence which the US authorities have provided him are exactly the same evidence that the British courts found to contain falsehood and held to be incredible and valueless.

I wonder why the immediate past AGF would think that the Nigerian courts can be deceived.

Additionally, it must be borne in mind that during the trial in the United Kingdom, the NDLEA sent its operatives to London to give evidence. And that evidence was to the effect that Prince Buruji Kashamu is not the person wanted for the drug-related offences.

One wonders what has changed now. Although one should not wonder for long knowing that the immediate past AGF and the Chairman of the NDLEA are now working for Prince Kashamu’s political opponents who will do anything to deprive him of his mandate which he won in a free and fair election.
There are many things wrong with the documents filed by the immediate past AGF. But all these will be dealt with in the court in due course.

The triumphant announcement by the NDLEA that they have served Prince Kashamu with extradition proceedings is not only laughable but false. He has not been served. Rather, a copy of the process was dropped in our office in Lagos yesterday. So, we shall deal with it in accordance with the law.

In the mean time, the NDLEA should be warned to stay away because they have no role to play in the current proceedings. And if we should discover that they have usurped the functions of the AGF, we shall certainly make an issue of it.

SAY NO TO RAPE: ARMED ROBBERS GANG-RAPE A NURSE IN LAGOS

An eighteen-year old auxiliary nurse has alleged that she was been raped by a group of robbers who invaded the hospital where she  works on Santa Maria Street, in Egan, Igando area of Lagos.

According to Punch, the robbers stormed the hospital in the wee hours of last Thursday, scaling the fence before gaining entrance into the premises of the hospital. After gaining entrance, they tied a 19-year-old security guard of the hospital with ropes and locked him up in a room.

The lady in question has since gone to report the case to the police, accusing the management of the hospital of dereliction of duty and said she was raped by the men.

“She also alleged that the owner of the hospital did not provide adequate security for his workers and subjected her to mental torture by losing her virginity through rape”, a source said.

The source added that the medical director of the hospital was arrested, but later released on bail.

The hospital’s medical director, Dr. Ademola Dominic, confirmed the incident but denied that the victim was raped. He also said he was never arrested by the police.

He further said that, “It is an everyday affair here. The robbers come to the street almost every time to rob residents. It is the third time they would come to the hospital. They came in and dispossessed patients of their valuables.

“When the incident happened, we took her through some tests and discovered she was intact. She is still a virgin and nothing happened to her. It is just that as a young girl, she suffered some shocks and that is all.

“But if you heard she was raped, well, maybe she was a victim of circumstances and that obviously was not my fault. If I have a house and robbers raid my house and then rape somebody, is that my fault?

“I am doing all these because of the girl. And if it is her parents or anybody that spreading wrong information, I don’t think I am to blame. I have already tried my best.
He concluded that the security had been beefed up in the area to forestall a recurrence.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, have denied any knowledge of the incident at the hospital.

DON'T TELL MY MUM & MY WIFE I'M A THIEF...SUSPECT

A suspect, Emmanuel Godwin, 28, has been arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Zone II, Onikan for allegedly snatching tricycles from the riders.

He also confessed that he was stealing the tricycles because he wanted to get rich quick and solved most of his financial problems. The suspect tricycles snatcher has begged policemen to ensure that his wife and mother didn’t know that he had been arrested.

Godwin, a father of two, said: “Till date, my wife isn’t aware that I’d been arrested. I don’t want her to know because she’s hypertensive. Even my mother is hypertensive. I also don’t want her to know. I had earlier been arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Zone II, Onikan, over the same offence. What made me to go into tricycles snatching was because I lost two of my tricycles to task force men from Alausa, Ikeja. I was a barber before I joined a gang that used to snatch tricycles. If I’m released, I’ll not steal tricycles again!”

A police source said: “The suspect used to pose as an innocent passenger to steal tricycles. He would hire a tricycle and tell the rider where he was going. The place would always be a somewhere convenient for him. Once the rider gets to the venue, Godwin would push him off and rode off with the tricycle. He usually picks venue where nobody would hear a rider calling for help.  He also looks for tricycles that are parked along the street or in front of a compound. He also targets Tricycles Park near restaurants. Once he sees any, he would there to eat, after that; he would come and ride away with it.”

Preliminary investigation by SARS showed that Godwin was first arrested by SARS operatives, Zone II on January 1, 2015 for stealing a tricycle.

Godwin was arrested last week after he stole another tricycle and the owner decided to lodge a complaint with SARS. In an operation led by the Officer in charge of SARS, Abba Kyari, Godwin was trailed to Ijora, where he had sold a stolen tricycle.
He was arrested after he was asked to come and collect money from a buyer who needed tricycle urgently and had cash to pay. Godwin was not aware that the supposed buyer was a member of SARS operatives.

Godwin said: “I’m a tricycle snatcher, not an armed robber! I don’t use gun. I steal from parks and when I ask tricycle rider for a test drive and he allows me, I run away with the tricycle. I used to sell each tricycle I steal at the rate of N60, 000. I have stolen about five tricycles and sold them to a man known as Aye at Ijora. I also sold two to one Rilwan. The market price of a tricycle is N400, 000. Aye still owes me for two tricycles I sold to him while RiLwan owes me one tricycle.”

According to him, he used to operate with a gang before, but decided to go solo. He initiated into the gang by his friend called, a drug addict, called Sodiq Babasunda, now late.

He said: “I didn’t know that they were tricycle snatchers until they used me five times to go and deliver to a buyer at Ijora. They used to give me N5, 000 after each delivery. When I felt that they were cheating me, I decided to go solo. The first tricycle I sold, I got N60, 000. I gave N25, 000 to my late colleague for helping me to get buyer.”
The State’s Command spokesman, Mr. Kenneth Nwosu confirmed the arrest of Godwin.
