Nigerians must take over the ownership of the
means of production of their economy and not allow foreign multinationals to
enjoy all the benefits, South Africa’s radical activist, Julius Malema, said on
Monday, as he visits Nigeria for the first time.
He said Nigerian leaders and youths must agitate
for economic independence and not allow the “imperialist forces” to plough all
their mineral resources and leave them in squalor.
He urged Nigerian leaders to create economic
programmes that will create jobs and they should involve the youths.
“Instead of fighting for jobs, let’s fight for opportunities,”
Malema said .
He went further to say that Nigeria and South
Africa must cooperate economically and build friendship to move Africa forward.
“We need to work together on issues of common
interest, we need to be partners not only in growing the Nigerian-South African
economies, but in building friendship,” he said.
Malema said “Nigerians
in South Africa are enjoying themselves. They are very influential. They relate
confidently in the society and even when there were some xenophobic attacks in
South Africa, Nigerians were not casualty of such xenophobic attacks,”
