Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye aka King Sunny Ade, ‘KSA’ was born on September 22, 1946
in Oshogbo, Osun state, Southwest
Nigeria to an Ondo royal family thus making him a Prince. His father was a church organist, while his mother was
a trader.
KSA
started his elementary and secondary education at Oshogbo up till 1963, when he left Oshogbo for Lagos to
pursue his carrier. He joined and plays with
Moses Olaiya & his Rhythm dandies, a Lagos juju band. In 1966 he formed his
first band the Green Spots, in 1974 he renamed the band the African Beats.
Juju music is a music of broad
social messages, which was rooted in the ancient Yoruba tradition of conveying
broad social and cultural messages. King sunny Ade, is a musician,
performer, guitarist, innovator and a moderniser per excellence that change the face of Juju music forever.
KSA was the first to
introduce lots of modern musical instruments such as ‘’pedal steel guitar to Nigerian pop music. He was the first to introduce the use of
synthesizers, clavinet, vibraphone, tenor guitar into the juju music repertoire such
as dub and wah-wah guitar licks ‘’
As an acclaimed world
class musician, KSA was nominated for Grammy Award
twice, thus making him the first
African to accomplish this status.
‘His
music was featured in the 1983 film Breathless, starring Richard
Gere, and the 1986
comedy One More Saturday
Night, and he acted in Robert Altman’s 1987 comedy O.C. and Stiggs.’
In
July 12, 2009, King Sunny Adé was inducted into the Afro Pop Hall of Fame, at the
Brooklyn African Festival in the
United States.
With 100plus albums to his credit already in
Nigeria, African music fans can surely look forward to more great things to
come, my own best album is ‘conscience’, the real heart beat.
This guy truly is a
genius.
