On Monday, at
Vatican, the bishops issued their first major synthesis of their talks, and the
language was surprisingly forthright, particularly concerning gays, calling on
the leaders of Roman Catholic Church to do more to reach out to gay and
divorced Catholics.
According to the
bishops numbering around 200 gathered in Vatican, they said: “Homosexuals have
gifts and qualities to offer to the Christian community,’ “Are we capable of
welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a fraternal space in our
communities?”
It was learnt
that the document reiterates its opposition to gay marriage and isn’t likely to
signal an opening to civil unions. But it acknowledges the “precious support”
homosexual unions can provide and emphasizes the need to support children who
live with same-sex couples.
It will also be
recalled that Pope Francis’ remark last year, when he said, “If a person is gay
and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge?”
