LATE CHIEF HUBERT OGUNDE: A THEATER ICON

Hubert Ogunde, (born 1916, Ososa, near Ijebu-Ode, Yorubaland was a playwright, actor, theatre manager, and musician, who was a pioneer in the field of African folk opera (drama in which music and dancing play a significant role). He was the founder of the Ogunde Concert Party (1945), the first professional theatrical company in Nigeria. Often regarded as the father of Nigerian theatre, Ogunde sought to reawaken interest in his country’s indigenous culture.

Ogunde’s first folk opera, The Garden of Eden and the Throne of God, was performed with success in 1944 while he was still a member of the Nigerian Police Force. It was produced under the patronage of an African Protestant sect, and it mixed biblical themes with the traditions of Yoruba dance-drama. His popularity was established throughout Nigeria by his timely play Strike and Hunger (performed 1946), which dramatized the general strike of 1945. In 1946 the name of Ogunde’s group was changed to the African Music Research Party, and in 1947 it became the Ogunde Theatre Company. Many of Ogunde’s early plays were attacks on colonialism, while those of his later works with political themes deplored interparty strife and government corruption within Nigeria. Yoruba theatre became secularized through his careful blending of astute political or social satire with elements of music hall routines and slapstick.

Ogunde’s most famous play, Yoruba Ronu (performed 1964; “Yorubas, Think!”), was such a biting attack on the premier of Nigeria’s Western region that his company was banned from the region—the first instance in post-independence Nigeria of literary censorship. The ban was lifted in 1966 by Nigeria’s new military government, and in that same year the Ogunde Dance Company was formed. Otito Koro (performed 1965; “Truth is Bitter”) also satirizes political events in western Nigeria in 1963. An earlier play produced in 1946, The Tiger’s Empire, also marked the first instance in Yoruban theatre that women were billed to appear in a play as professional artists in their own right.

Ogunde’s technique was to sketch out the basic situation and plot, and then write down and rehearse only the songs of his plays. The dialogue was improvised, thus allowing the actors to adjust to their audience. The plays produced by his company usually reflected the prevailing political climate and interpreted for audiences the major issues and the aspirations of those in power.

His company performed with equal ease in remote villages and in metropolitan centres of Nigeria (as well as throughout West Africa). Many of Ogunde’s later folk operas were basically popular musicals featuring jazzy rhythms, fashionable dance routines, and contemporary satire. Through this format, he set an example for a successful commercial theatre and prepared audiences all over Nigeria for his followers. During the 1960s and ’70s his plays became an important part of the urban pop culture of West Africa. Apart from his song 'Yoruba Ronu' (Yoruba please reflect) of the 1960s which was a hit, he also produced the indelible Aiye and Jaiyesimi. He sadly died in London, England on 4th of April, 1990.

A museum was opened at Ogun state, Yorubaland in 2015 to immotalise this icon.

BEWARE OF DOGS: A LADY VICIOUSLY MAULED BY HER BULL DOGS!

Makhala Ramaela ,47, from G Section in Botshabelo, South Africa, was last Saturday, viciously mauled by  her pit bull dogs.

Makhala, who is recovering at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein, is puzzled by what made her beloved dogs turn against her. She said she had been living alone for a long time and thugs were terrorising her.

Five years ago she decided to get the dogs. The dogs – a bitch named Siby and a male named Rex – eventually built a loving and protective relationship with her.

"I managed to tame them and fed them every morning before work. My dogs loved me. I would find them peering over the devils’ fork waiting for me after work. They would jump with joy as I entered the yard," she said.

But on Saturday the dogs attacked her viciously.
"I was shocked and realized something was not right. I screamed for help as the dogs started to attack. I thought I could get away by running into the outside toilet but that was not to be. They just tore into me.”
Her scared neighbours tried to save her by spraying the dogs with water.
"That actually made them more enraged. I was rescued by the arrival of the police who fired some shots."
Police spokesman Constable Peter Kareli, who confirmed the incident said one of the dogs has died and they are waiting for the owner to decide fate of the other.

FORMER LAWMAKER SON SENTENCED TO DEATH BY HANGING

Mu’ammar Tukur,32, son of former House of Representatives member and District Head of Bakori, has been  sentenced to death by hanging for culpable homicide by Katsina State High court .

Tukur who stabbed one Shafir Muktar to death on April 21st, 2008 during a fight between him and some other young men at a football viewing center. went into hiding between 2008 and 2013 after committing the crime and was arrested at the grave yard during the funeral of his deceased mother.

Delivering judgment in the case , the presiding judge, Justice Abbas Bawale, said the argument put forward by the convict's counsel, AbdulAziz Olagoke, were unsustainable.

He added that Tukur's explanation that he was provoked to commit the crime was not satisfactory because he left the scene and came with the metallic instrument to commit the crime.

The judge said the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt as required by law and sentenced the convict to death by hanging. He stressed that the plea for leniency could not be entertained because the court’s discretion was blocked by law and directed that the plea should be set to the state governor.

DAYO ADELEKE 'BRIDE-TO-BE' WHO WAS MURDERED BY HER CAMEROONIAN STEWARD LAID TO REST....(PHOTOS)

A friend of Dayo Enioluwa Adeleke, who was murdered by her Cameroonian steward posted these beautiful photos of the deceased used on the burial programme along with a touching tribute.

Dayo, was laid to rest yesterday, Thursday, December 29th, at The Vaults and Gardens after a service of songs and funeral service at Guiding Light Assembly, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi Lagos. See photos from the funeral and the tribute after the cut..

"As I woke up and came out of my room this morning, thoughts of Dayo continue to flood my mind, just has it has continually since I got to hear of her passing.
Shortly after, my brother Olawale Adeniyi who is on holiday also came out of his room. As we spoke about this tragic loss, we asked that God should comfort the family.
I said to my brother that I saw a beautiful photo of her online and I would love to have that photo. I said to him that it would be nice for her family to remember her as she was in that picture.
She looked truly happy. I said to my brother that I bet she is laughing like that in heaven and looking at us all gloomy eyed and sad, saying if only we know how much more of a better place she is now. I just love that picture.
Soon after I arrived in church, sat down and schemed through the programme, I noticed that it was that very picture that was at the back of the programme. I felt so much peace, for the first time since her passing, I felt so much peace and it was captioned perfectly " I HAVE COMPLETED MY RACE". My mind got to work again. I thought of Dayo and how similar our lives are/were. She lived life to the max and had fun whilst she was at it. Reading through her tributes, I see she did her own thing and ran her OWN race.
She passed on at the age of 33 just like Jesus. He also ran HIS race. He completed His race in that time.
This race of life is NOT about the duration as much as we would love to all live till we are really old. It's not for the fastest, swiftest, richest, smartest etc.
We all have our own UNIQUE race to run and how we complete that race irrespective of time is how successful we truly are. I am at peace and comforted knowing Dayo, you rest continually with the Lord.
When I walked from the church shortly after 7pm after the Candle Light vigil yesterday, I turned back as I became fearful and paranoid. I had to ask my husband to come and pick me up. I am not one who is usually fearful.
This is exactly what the enemy wants, for us to doubt the love of God, to question the Unquestionable and to rob us of our peace. TBC. Continue to rest in peace."
