Felipe, 46, is now the new King of Spain. He became king after his father, Juan Carlos, 76, abdicated earlier this month following a series of scandals and a period of poor health.
It was reported that there was a reception for around 2,000 guests back at the palace, the public also had their moment of celebration as the new royal family took to the balcony to wave to the crowds below. .
However, compared with royal handovers in other countries, there has been little pomp and ceremony and no foreign leaders were invited. It was more of an official process; attended by lawmakers, high-level politicians and some members of the royal family.
Felipe married to Letizia Ortiz, a former divorcee, daughter of a journalist and a nurse both have two children Leonor, 8, and Sofia, 7. Now assuming the title Princess of Asturias, Leonor has just become Europe's youngest direct royal heir.
Ortiz made headlines when she told Felipe in public to shut up. "Let me finish," she said, smiling, in front of a throng of cameras after their engagement was announced. Now that she is the queen, she will learn to take a queue behind the king.
"The preparation of the future queen is solid... because before she was queen... she was a woman with a degree, who comes from the lower middle class with parents and grandparents who had to work for a living," Paloma Barrientos, a reporter who covers the palace in Madrid said.
