'BEING ABUSED AS A CHILD GAVE ME STRENGTH'~~FISAYO AJIBOLA

Fisayo Ajisola, a Biochemistry graduate from Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Ogun state,  started as an actress but recently produced her own short movie titled ‘Road To Ruin’, a movie that focuses on child abuse and trafficking.

She speaks about child abuse with Adewoyin Adeniyi in this interview. Excerpt.......

You once mentioned that you were abused at a tender age. Was that what brought about the Jewel Empowerment Foundation?

I don’t know if I’m ready to share this now, but I have once shared it with the media. Somehow, it inspired the creation of the NGO and that is why one of my focuses is children that have been abused in one way or the other.

My life story is a constant inspiration for me because every day comes with a fresh inspiration to prosper, to make sure I achieve greatness irrespective of my childhood. And sincerely, this is the gospel I preach through The Jewel Empowerment Foundation. Nothing can stop us from achieving greatness.

Are you still traumatised by the abuse?

No! Rather than paralyze me, it gave me strength. It gave me reason to look inward and appreciate my inner being. I learnt to love and accept who I am. And as you can see, I am happy.

Has the experience affected your sex life in anyway?

(Laughing) I don’t know, I don’t think I want to talk about it right now. But usually, early exposure to sex as a child affects one’s life when matured. Most times, ladies who are abused as a child tend to stay off men completely or they are often being with men. It’s depends on the personality of the person.

How do you think the government can curb violence against children as it is among the objectives of your NGO?

This can be done through partnership/collaboration. Government must continually partner with nongovernmental organisation, agencies and other relevant organisations to curb violence against children. Our collective effort as a body would yield significant results.

CRISIS: POLICE SHUT ONDO HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY

The crisis rocking the Ondo State House of Assembly continues on Monday morning as police shut the Assembly premises.

This was to prevent a fracas which would have occurred at the Assembly between factions loyal to Hon. Malachi Coker and Hon. Jumoke Akindele who are laying claim to the speakership seat.

Coker’s faction impeached Akindele last Friday evening but the woman insisted that she remain the speaker because her removal did not meet the constitutional requirement.

The Nation learnt gathered that the legislators in Coker’s camp gained entrance to the Assembly premises as early as 6:00 a.m.‎ on Monday

Coker immediately sat on the speaker’s seat in readiness for the day’s plenary.

The Akindele’s faction later stormed the Assembly and the embattled speaker personally challenged Coker that he has no right to sit on the speaker’s seat.

But Coker told her she is no longer the Assembly speaker because she had been impeached.

This caused altercation between the two factions.

Police operatives led by the state Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, who were already at the Assembly premises to prevent break down of law and order, stormed the House chamber and ordered the lawmakers including the workers to leave the place immediately

YOMI PETERS RECOUNTS LONG-TIME FEUD BETWEEN SIR SHINA PETERS ....18 YEARS AFTER !

In 1998, a story broke that Yomi Peters planned an armed robbery attack on his elder brother and Juju superstar, Sir Shina Peters (SSP). 18 years after the incident, which has caused a long-time feud between the brothers, Yomi told The Nation exclusively about what really went down.

Yomi, who is the third of three brothers from the same parents, felt it was high time he cleared the air, as the incident between him and their eldest brother continues to buzz on the internet with many dubbing him an armed robber.

According to Yomi who is also a musician, he had gone to see SSP in his Iju Station home in Lagos to resolve some family issues, involving their other brother whose wife had come to complain that her husband has abandoned her with their four children.

He said his immediate elder brother’s wife had come to see him during a show at Heritage Garden, Isolo, Lagos, complaining that ‘my brother drove him out with four children because my brother stayed back in America and didn’t follow her back to Nigeria.’

He said he promised her to come and see his brother (Sir Shina peters) to discuss the matter to know what is really happening.

On that note, he said: “I went to Shina Peters’ house, it was around 7pm and I met the gateman who knew me and greeted me, but did not open the gate for me as he needed to get clearance from his boss. I was there waiting with the man who drove me down. After about 30 minutes without any response, I knocked on the gate again. I wanted to ask the security that whether my brother said he should not open the gate for us,” said Yomi.

“After that, we didn’t hear about the security. We did not even see him. We did not even know what was going on. And the guy that drove me there was telling me, ‘let’s go. I don’t think this is your brother’s house. I said, ‘don’t worry. Maybe he is sleeping and they’re trying to tell him.

“Soon, we heard people shouting Ole! Ole! (thief, thief) from the house. And the person that took me to the place was telling me, let’s go. E bi like say they are shouting armed robber on you.’ I said no, no, no. I was scared for my brother, thinking there may be an armed robber in the house. My brother’s house was built with electric fence. So you cannot climb it. How are you going to climb light wire? So definitely, climbing the fence, as alleged was a lie. I just climbed the flower bed to open the security house to see what was going on inside because I didn’t imagine it was me they were calling an armed robber. So when I tried to open it, I saw my brother in knicker with his wife. And before I knew it, he had called the police.

“So, I said, ‘ah, my brother, is it me that you are calling armed robber?’ Before I knew it, policemen arrived from Oko-Oba Police Station. They searched both of us but found no gun. When my brother opened the gate, it was then that I knew what was going on: Sammy, his wife said, ‘they are 20 in number’, that the rest armed robbers had run away.”

Upon discovering that he and Shina Peters were blood brothers, Yomi said the police dismissed the matter saying it was a family affair. “The situation on that day was chaotic and if I was not also well-known in the area, they could have killed us,” he said.

“I entered the house and confronted my brother over the allegation of robbery. I was so mad, I started fighting with him. Then, my brother’s wife locked the gate and unknown to me, she went to call another set of policemen.”

This time, the police reportedly held Yomi and ordered him to come with them to the station, “but I insisted that the person that accused me of robbery must come along. But my brother diverted along the way and never got to the station with us. I refused to write any statement without the complainant being present. Thus, they locked me and the driver up. The next morning, we saw a newspaper  headline that read: ‘Yomi Peters with armed robbery gang invade Shina Peters’ house. All the papers that carried the story had it on their front page.

“My brother sent one of his fans, Tunde Adaba, on the second day to tell the police that I was not an armed robber, but the police were adamant and said nothing could be done until Shina Peters shows up. So they locked Tunde Adaba up too.”

Yomi said Adaba’s wife then went to cause a scene at Shina Peters’ house over the detention of her husband. It was not until the third day that Shina Peters came to the police station with an ex Police Commissioner who pleaded with him.

“The man called used the Bible and Quran to preach to me, he used Koran to preach for me. And I asked my brother one question: “Am I an armed robber?” but he simply replied, ‘let’s forget it.'”

Yomi said further that Shina Peters asked the police to make him sign an undertaking to the effect that he (Yomi) will never enter Shina Peters’ house again, which he had since obeyed.

Yomi, who revealed that he travelled to the United States shortly after that incident has just returned to Nigeria to continue with his music career. The singer who has just released a single titled ‘Igbeyawo’, said the reason he is telling the story was to clear his name.

BRITISH PM DISAGREES WITH TRUMP'S BAN ...BUT DOWNING STREET REJECTS CALLS TO CANCEL HIS VISIT !

The Prime Minister's spokesman said that Theresa May "disagreed" with the ban, but the planned state visit would not be impacted by it, and the petition was a matter for Parliament.

"We don't agree with these restrictions, it is not the way we would do it.

"Where people's rights, UK citizens' rights, have been affected, we have set about getting a clarification to allow them to travel.

"As we pointed out last week, where we disagree with something we are happy to say we disagree with it," he told a regular Westminster briefing.

The PM's spokesman added: "We have extended an invitation to the president, he has accepted it, and it is right that we continue to forge our close relationships."

GUNMEN ATTACK MOSQUE IN CANADA: 6 PEOPLE KILLED AND 2 SUSPECTS ARRESTED

Six people were killed and more injured after gunmen opened fire in a Québec City mosque during evening prayers in what the Canadian prime minister called a "terrorist attack on Muslims".

"We condemn this terrorist attack on Muslims in a centre of worship and refuge," Justin Trudeau said in a statement following the shooting.

The gunmen opened fire in the mosque during evening prayers, Mohamed Yangui, Québec City Islamic Cultural Centre, told reporters.
In what was described as a coordinated attack, witnesses say at least two gunmen wearing black fired indiscriminately into the dozens of worshipers -- including families -- in the mosque.

Thirty-nine people who were at the mosque during shooting were unharmed, Christine Coulombe, spokeswoman of National Police of Quebec, said. Of the eight injured, six are described as being in critical condition.
Québec City police spokesman Constable Pierre Poirier said two suspects were arrested. Police said the mosque had been evacuated and things were under control.

An eyewitness saw heavily armed tactical police entering the mosque, Reuters reported. Police spokesman Etienne Doyon declined to say whether there was a gunman inside the mosque.

Local newspaper Le Soleil said it had obtained information that one of the suspects was a 27-year-old with "a Québec name", and one had an AK-47 automatic weapon in his possession. Police, however, have not released nor confirmed these details.
